Source: Chris Brown 'Knocked Around' Rihanna
New details have emerged about the midnight altercation between Chris Brown and Rihanna that led to Brown being booked on a felony criminal threat charge on Sunday.

"Chris knocked her around," a source close to the couple tells PEOPLE. "Black eye, blood, bruises. She had to be treated by a doctor."

A police source confirms to PEOPLE that the singer suffered a black eye as well as "a swollen split lip and two red and purple contusions on either side of her forehead." The source, who described police photos of Rihanna, added, "She looked distraught and in a lot of pain. Her eyes were closed because she was looking down."

The Barbados-bred beauty, 20 – who is currently in "a safe place," says a friend – is cooperating with detectives, according to the Los Angeles Times. Los Angeles Police Chief William Bratton has said he expects the case will be handed over to the district attorney's office on Tuesday or Wednesday. At that time, the prosecutors could charge Brown, 19, with more crimes.

Everything was supposed to go perfect on Grammy day, but right when Chris was to sing "Forever" onstage at Los Angeles' Staples Center, he was caught by police, being questioned for allegedly roughing up Rihanna.

The stupid 19 year-old singer has been officially booked into the custody of the Los Angeles Police Department on suspicion of making felony criminal threats. Brown got out of jail after he paid the bail set at $50,000.

Rihanna will release a new version of her 2007 smash hit album Good Girl Gone Bad on May 27 2008. The reissued album will feature the Ne-Yo written track Take A Bow.

Chris Brown surrendered to Los Angeles police on Sunday evening regarding a felony battery investigation of the R&B singer, Officer Karen Smith confirms to PEOPLE.

"He turned himself in around 7 p.m. to one of our stations and is being interviewed by detectives now," Officer Smith said. According to law enforcement records, Brown, 19, was taken into custody at 6:30 p.m. and was officially booked at 7:41 p.m. for making criminal threats.
